How did northern communities cope when their men and boys went off to the Civil War? When we think of the American Civil War, we usually recall battlefields, heroes, monuments, books and movies. It is difficult to relate such a horrendous war with the ordinary folks who remained at home and tried to maintain some semblance of normal life while waiting for their young men to return. Through these short accounts we get a glimpse of the political and emotional turmoil back home while the boys of Licking County were away fighting. Although not a thorough treatise of Licking County in the war, the stories represent a fair cross-section of the life and times of this small country population, which had only been an Ohio county for 53 years. Its soldiers were sons and grandsons of pioneers from New England and the southern states, so their politics spanned the gamut from abolition to Copperhead Democrats to outright racism. They left a legacy of both glory and heartache for their families and communities, just as in thousands of other small towns across the nation.

"Shall Licking County Raise a Regiment", the role of Licking County, Ohio in the Civil War, compiled and edited by Dan Fleming.

Licking County, Ohio - fifty or so miles east of Columbus - is probably one of the two or three most beautiful areas in the state. Newark, its' county seat, is a typical yet atypical small town showing its' age and tough years beside the gleam of its' pride in, and reverence for, its' notable history.
This modest book was compiled from historical news items -most just a couple pages - collected for the town's commemoration of the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. The roster of very talented, very professional, very savvy folks who worked to produce this excellent volume for the celebration is astounding for the fact that Licking County is a very rural county among several other very rural counties. Dan Fleming is the Librarian at Newark's library - an institution that would be the pride of any city a dozen times the size of Newark.
Yes, the book is intended for the edification of people in Licking County and the "plateau" area of Ohio. But it holds a very real and sometimes poignant interest for many people from many areas because it gives the reader a view of the Civil War through the eyes of the people who stayed home to worry and work and support the soldiers of the Civil War. And that is certainly refreshing in the midst of all the cavalry charges and cannonades.
It shows clearly that the Courage and the sacrifices and the wearisome work and frightful times were as common, or more so, at home among the women as they were on the battlefields. Contributors Linda Leffel and Martha Sturgill produced some particularly interesting chapters about the ladies' adaptations to the war, and about local hero, ten-year-old Johnny Clem.
This is fascinating and Fun History because it is not the history of some lone-gone event but rather the history of real, everyday people just like the ones all of us know wherever we live.

This book is more like a collection of short articles dealing with the people and events of Licking County during the Civil War. Each entry is short, about a page or two, yet gives the reader a feeling for the events happening during the time period. Currently, there is a renewed interest in this period in American history because we are marking the 150th anniversary of the Civil War. This book should prove to be of interest to even the most casual of Civil War buffs. I enjoyed it very much.
